Hello! It’s time for another book review! For this book review, I decided to do Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga. This book is filled with hope, power and love.
Jude is happy with her life in Syria with her Mama, Baba, and older brother Issa. She loves sitting with her best friend Fatima behind the counter of her Baba’s store, taking long walks on the beach with her older brother, and acting out the actors from American movies like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Reese Witherspoon.
But Syria is changing. Now, there is violence and protesters walking on the streets. Her beloved older brother has become more secretive. He wants to leave Syria, go to a better place....like America.
Jude would rather stay put. However, when her mother believes that it isn’t safe for them anymore, she and Jude leave Syria and go to Cincinnati to live with relatives.
Jude soon learns that America is not like the movies. Not everyone is rich and has big houses. And, Jude gets the labels “Middle Eastern“ and “Refugee”.
But America also has good things to offer, like a school musical and new friends. And with the help of her Uncle Mazin, Aunt Michelle, Mama, cousins and friends....will Jude learn to accept America as a home?
