*This book is a YA novel, recommended for ages 13+
Ayesha, a sixteen-year-old girl from India has big dreams for herself, namely getting into Northwestern University, the college of her choice. She's completing high school in Illinois to ensure that she gets a good education, and eventually, a great life.
Soon after arriving, Aisha meets Suresh, her yet-to-be boyfriend, and they become inseparable. But, because his father gets sick, Suresh has to return to India, promising Aisha that he’ll be back. Aisha holds onto this hope, but everything changes when she finds out that she’s pregnant.
With no one to tell, as she’s scared that her family back home and her aunt and uncle that she’s staying with will disown her for getting pregnant without being married first, Aisha goes through her pregnancy alone, deciding not to get an abortion and give up her baby for adoption instead.
Sam and Mel, the adoptive moms’ of Aisha’s baby let Aisha stay with them and finish up her high school career for the final weeks of her pregnancy in Houston, Texas. After giving birth to Mira, Aisha's baby, Aisha returns to India, abandoning her dreams of going to Northwestern University for her yearning to go home once again.
Eighteen years later, Aisha’s daughter Mira is in her senior year of high school, living in Houston with her moms and sister, Nadia, when she finds letters that her birth mom wrote to her in a box in her garage. In one of the letters, Mira reads that Aisha wants to meet Mira in Mumbai on her 18th birthday.
Although Mira wants to meet her biological mother, she might not be ready for what she’s going to learn about Aisha and Suresh, or what she's going to learn about herself.
Meet Me in Mumbai, told through two challenging perspectives, emphasizes feelings of love, fear, anger, and uncertainty to highlight a mother, her daughter, and their journeys to not only find each other, but find themselves.
